About the Museum

The history of the museum in Hradec Králové dates back to 1880 when the municipal museum was established. Its collection first opened to the public on 1st February 1885 in St. Wenceslas’ Chapel at Building No. 33 in Žižka Square.
Today, the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové is the largest regional museum in the Hradec Králové Region. Since 2001 it has served as a semi-public organisation run by the Hradec Králové Region. It functions as a museum under the relevant provisions of Act. No.122/2000 Coll. on the Protection of Museum Collections and the Amendment to Certain Other Acts. It was established to acquire, gather, preserve, record and archive museum collections and make them accessible to the public. At present, the museum possesses archaeological, historical and natural science collections amounting to approximately 3,000,000 exhibits, including items entered into secondary documentation.
Apart from its long-term displays, the museum is home to about 10 to 15 themed exhibitions and runs a range of other cultural and social events. It publishes various periodical and non-periodical publications as well as organising professional conferences and seminars.

In 1993 the Museum came into possession of The Battle of Chlum 1866 Memorial, featuring The War of 1866 Museum, of which the historical part opened in 1936. The newest part of the museum was built in 2008-2010. Subsequently in 2011, the old museum building – which now houses a projection hall and a lecture hall – was reconstructed. On 31st March 2012 a new exhibition on the Austro-Prussian War, supplemented by interactive and multimedia elements, opened to the public with the aim of reflecting the needs of visitors of all ages and interests.

The museum also acts as a partner to the Prehistoric Archaeological Park project in Všestary. The project includes the construction of comprehensive premises within the archaeological park, providing a unique prehistoric exhibition with vivid demonstrations of prehistoric customs, crafts and traditions. As part of the archaeological park, the current “prehistoric village” will be extended and made into a comprehensive site with a new building, which will house a main exhibition on prehistory, a building featuring an outdoor display and samples of prehistoric structures, including Neolithic and Eneolithic houses, as well as an exhibition of domestic animals.
